As of 2:30 P.M. Friday, October 20, 2017, Monroe Township is a 100% internally generated groundwater supplied water system.  In the above photo, Director Michael Barnes is assisted by Greg Cook, Foreman and Michael Ott, Water Superintendent in shutting off an interconnection with the New Jersey American Water Company who supplemented the Monroe Township Utility Department (M.T.U.D.) with treated surface water for 30 years.

Historically, for the life of the 30 year Contract, Monroe Township Utility Department (M.T.U.D.) received 500,000 gallons of water per day at an annual cost of nearly $575,000.  Several years before the current Contract expired, NJ American had requested that a renewal to this Contract be for a minimum of 20 years.  At current charges, this small amount of water (approximately 12         % of the water used by M.T.U.D. customers) would cost well over $10,000,000 over the life of the new Contract.

In an effort to maintain base water and sewer costs to our customers, M.T.U.D. with the approval of Mayor Tamburro and the Township Council, purchased a 3,000,000 gallon per day water allocation in 2014 and 2015 and developed two (2) new groundwater wells in the Northern area of Monroe Township in 2016.

Well #25, on Spotswood-Englishtown Road, has been designed to filter iron and manganese from the groundwater at a 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 gallons per day capacity.  Well #26, on Avenue K and across from Veteran’s Park, will be initially used as an irrigation water supply.  Design plans have been prepared and will be advanced for funding and construction in 2018/2019 for both of these projects.

With the approval of the Mayor and Township Council and the guidance of our new Business Administrator, M.T.U.D. is seeking NJ Environmental Infrastructure Trust (NJEIT) Funding for the construction of these wells where currently 75% of the funds borrowed would be at 0% interest for up to 30 years.  Use of NJEIT funds will result in an overall interest rate of approximately 0.7% and will help M.T.U.D. continue to provide base residential water and sewer constantly well beyond the current 26+ years of no increases in base residential rates.

In addition to the water supply and financial benefits, the following lists all other benefits associated with the termination of the 30 year long Contract with NJ American:

·         100% Monroe Township owned groundwater supply

·         Eliminates use of a Surface Supply and reduces seasonal and temperature changes

·         Consistent Water Quality and Disinfectant Use

·         Additional capacity to export water to neighboring communities in need.

·         Significant cost savings
